CREATIVES AND MENTAL HEALTH Kuonyesha Art Fund Conversation Facilitated by Dr. Rita Sonko

Creativity holds immense power to express, influence, and transform. Yet, behind every artistic act is a mind navigating vulnerability, pressure, and the weight of expectation. In Uganda where mental health in the arts remains heavily stigmatized, the Kuonyesha Art Fund is helping shift the narrative.

This timely conversation, led by Dr. Rita Sonko, explored the complex relationship between artistic expression and mental wellness. From cultural roots of collective healing to today’s digital pressures, the dialogue unpacked key challenges creatives face, while offering practical strategies for resilience and emotional balance.

Anchored in the Toli Wekka ("You are not alone") campaign, this session emphasized the need for community support, professional care, and honest conversations within creative spaces. Mental health is not a side issue, it’s central to sustainable creativity.

Together, we’re building a creative industry where artists feel seen, safe, and supported.
